Phil,
Just want to comment on your decision whether to wear that Aussie rugby jersey in support vs the Springboks when you get your Aussie citizenship.
I personally don’t believe that you are obliged to change support to the sports team where you live just because you’ve moved to a different town, province or country for that matter.
It is more than that – it is the emotional bond that you have with the team you support. It is your blood, it is the PASSION that you feel when you put on the supporters jersey and stand and sing the national anthem of the country they originate from, it is pride you feel and adrenalin flowing through your body when they win and it is support you give when they loose. At the end of the day, it is passion, passion, passion!!
And if you can go to a sports game where the Boks and Aus are playing and shout for Aus and feel passionate, excited, feel that team’s spirit flow through your veins when they score, then go right ahead and change to being an Aussie supporter. But don’t kid yourself my friend if your heart’s with the Boks and your head’s with the Aussies. It is much more than just putting on the new supporters jersey.
There are many people here in SA for that matter that are passionate All Black supporters or Cape Tonions who are Sharks supporters (Bridgitte is one of them).
Although it is assumed that people choose sports teams they support based on where they live, they also choose a team they can believe in – hence the huge support worldwide for the Premier League football in the UK.
